Jacob France Institute obtains U.S. Department of Agriculture grant

To: UB Faculty and Administration

From: Joseph S. Wood, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Date: April 20, 2010

It is with great pleasure that I announce that the University of Baltimore Jacob France Institute has been awarded a $500,000 competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to conduct an evaluation of the joint contributions of the supplemental nutrition assistance program and unemployment insurance to the nation's safety net. Jane Staveley, Senior Research Associate, leads the project under the direction of David Stevens, Executive Director of the JFI. UB is the lead institution of a team that includes Georgia State University, W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research, Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago, and the University of Texas at Austin.

This grant represents the outcome of over 10 years of employment research for the U.S. Department of Labor and several Maryland state agencies, and is the culmination of a small planning grant JFI received last year from USDA. Please join me in congratulating Jane, David and the Jacob France Institute staff in this significant achievement!
